significant symbols
     -his scar
     - his wand
     - its always dark during the quest....(then harry conquers the quest and the sun comes out.)

*DEPARTURE*

-Call to adventure
harry, Ron and Hermione set out to find the remaining horcruxes. They already have 2 horcruxes. they must find the remaining 5. Since Dumbledore died in the previous book (harry potter and the half blood prince) they don't know exactly where to find them or what they might even be. Harry must think like Voldemort in order to locate the final Horcruxes. they are essentially in hiding from the ministry because harry is wanted.

 -Supernatural Aid
Although Dumbledore is dead he seems to be the main super natural aid for harry, Ron and      Hermione. He left them each something in his will that would help them during their quest. He left harry the the first golden snitch that he caught in harry potter and the sorcerers stone.  he left Ron the light catcher thing(real name??) And he left Hermione the book of the deathly hallows. He also left the sword of griffindor to harry but the minister of magic took it back because he said it did not belong to dumbledore for him to give it away.Dumbledore wanted them to have the sword because it was able to break the horcruxes when they found them. Each of these things helped them in some way.

The crossing of the threshold-
The crossing of the first threshold happens on Ron's older brother bills wedding day. They are at the reception when the death eaters suddenly arrive forcing Harry Ron and Hermione to vanish to London. From that point on they are on the run trying to defeat the horcruxes and Voldemort. This can also be the belly of the whale.

*INITIATION*

-Road of Trials
Harry and his friends go through many task/trials in the final book. he has to not only find the horcruxes but he also has defeat Voldemort and find the deathly hallows before Voldemort. I don't think he fails at any of the trials, i think because of Hermione and Ron are there to help him along the way.

-Meeting with a Goddess
The goddess in Hp7 i believe its not a "person" but its just the love he has for Hogwarts( his real home) he has a deep love for his parents whom he never met but is still fighting for them. He desperately wishes that he can feel the "real love" from his parents or be able to hug them. The main power behind him fighting Voldemort is avenging his parents.

-Atonement with Father or Apotheosis
When he finds out that Prof. Snape has been on Dumbledores side the entire time. He realises that Snape has been trying to protect him and not trying to kill him. That gives him more empathy and sorrow for never believing in him and gives him more strength to fight.

-The Ultimate Boon
Harry's boon i feel is knowing that Voldemort is never going to come back and that his future kids will be able to grow up in the magical world free of any harm. also that his parents death has been avenged.

*RETURN*

-The magic flight
Although harry doesn't necessarily "run" with the boon(the elder wand) to hide it he does however break it in half and tosses it off the broken bridge at Hogwarts.

-The Crossing of the Return Threshold
I don't believe Harry ever goes back to the muggle world. He does wind up 19 years later marrying Ginny (Ron's sister, Harry's love interest in the series.)and having three kids of his own.

another 8 step formula that might fit hp7 better
Campbell's proposed structure has been expanded and modified since its conception. Many modern characterizations of it add in new steps (such as the hero having a miraculous birth) or combine or prune others. For instance, Phil Cousineau, in his book, The Hero's Journey, divides it up into the following eight steps:
  1. The Call to Adventure
  2. The Road of Trials
  3. The Vision Quest
  4. The Meeting with the Goddess
  5. The Boon
  6. The Magic Flight
  7. The Return Threshold
  8. The Master of Two Worlds

  1. This is a really solid beginning. I like how you've broken down the story and matched it so well to the Monomyth. I really like that you picked up on Snape being the Atontment part.

  2. I really like how you listed the whole monomyth, as it gave me inspiration to do mine. Great job! :)
